Feature Artist: Richard LaRovere
Richard lives in Jersey City, NJ and has been drawing and painting for almost 60 years. He started at 4 years old, and started taking private painting classes at 15. He later earned a BFA degree from New Jersey City University in 1978.
His drawing technique is self taught and the result of research, practice and trial and error. Growing up and living in an urban area, he was always inspired by buildings, particularly the character and detail of old buildings. He was fortunate when he was younger to make the acquaintance of people who were civic activists and historic preservationists which led further to his inclination to make old architecture in general a major component of his body of work.
Per Richard, ecclesiastical architecture in particular has been one of the most inspirational forms of expression after civic and domestic architecture. That is why he did the series of church interiors represented here and also why he selected a number of interiors of churches in my area that no longer exist: therefore bookmarking the past and documenting what may be a lost aesthetic.
