Artist: Michael Genova
Title: Saint Mark Lion
Medium: Acrylic and metallic leaf

The lion became a popular metaphoric representation for the evangelist St. Mark for many reasons.  When the four beasts which surround the throne of God featured in the book of Revelations became associated with the four evangelists, the winged lion was attributed to Mark.  In the beginning of Mark's gospel John the Baptist cries in the wilderness, like a lion roaring, preparing the way for the Lord demanding repentance for sins.

Historic legends hold that centuries after the martyrdom of St. Mark in Alexandria the body of the evangelist was taken to Venice.Because of this the representation of the lion of St. Mark has become the universal symbol for Venice appearing on its flags and in the many works of art which adorn the city.Venetian lions can be categorized into two groups, "in moleca" which means 'crab like' and the full bodied walking lion. The image here is of the former "in moleca" type where the lion's head is featured prominently, holding a closed book, and the wings rise up and around the figure resembling the claw of a crab. The entire figure is surrounded in a quatrefoil design with a raised gold leaf pattern.
