Title: The Return of the Holy Family from Egypt
Artist: Nicolás Enríquez (Mexican, 1704–1790)
Medium: Oil on copper
Date: 1773

This is a dramatic and beautiful rendition of Jesus and the Holy Family returning to Israel after their self-imposed exile to Egypt after Jesus’ birth. To avoid King Herod’s massacre of male children in Israel, Mary, Joseph and Jesus fled to Egypt:
”And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.” (KJV Matthew 2:13)

They later returned to Israel once King Hared had died:
”Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead…” (KJV Matthew 2:20)
